In a dance studio in Lyon, a curious group meets every Monday. Some of them have already crossed paths in the corridors of the Vinatier hospital, a psychiatric and mental health facility. All amateur dancers, they are discovering movement and the pleasure of dancing together, and find themselves in the same creative mood around choreographer Ariane.

“The jury praises and recognizes a film in which we forget the camera, because we become it, in a cinema perspective so direct that we enter into the process. The work is captivating, resonating within us, giving us and giving us back a whole presence through the experience. The emotional engagement of the gaze, of the lens, gradually reveals to us the different layers and life circumstances of each participant.”
The dancer-mentor’s choreographic approach, too, is rooted in human warmth, with no intention beyond that of contributing to people’s journey. Artistic choices came later, and did not insist on directing a human approach. This humility on the part of both the choreographer and the filmmaker made the film the work of the human beings who are its subjects; the cinematography and editing choices subsequently revealed the art in each of the people. “At Lake”

“At Lake” is inspired by Maya Deren’s 1943 film “At Land”. Through movement, natural sounds and music by Montréal composer Merewenn Nero, “At Lake” explores the surrealism of Deren’s original work, as well as the natural lake environment of Québec’s Eastern Townships.
